WDC Education Foundation to raise money for band
The Wadena-Deer Creek (WDC) Education Foundation is focusing its energy this fall on raising money to bring back the fifth-grade band program, according to Sue Ann Lind, Foundation board trustee.
"The purpose of the WDC Education Foundation Fund is to offer funding for activities that enrich the educational experience of WDC students," Lind explained. "In past years, we have awarded smaller grants to support varied activities. This year, we wish to focus on one project, which is to re-establish a fifth-grade band program. This program had to be abandoned in the past due to budget cuts."
The WDC School Board recently approved a part-time fifth-grade band teaching position; however, it's contingent on funds raised by the Foundation. Current band director Lisa Weniger, along with Ken Nelson, who was approved for the elementary position, will work together to build WDC's band program.
Nelson comes to Wadena-Deer Creek with exceptional credentials, especially with his marching band experience. He retired from Bertha-Hewitt Public Schools in 2008. Nelson is no stranger to WDC, as he filled in for Weniger last year when she was on maternity leave.
To generate funds for the band program, the Foundation will be hosting its first-ever "Fall Fest" on Friday, Sept. 25, prior to the football game from 4-7 p.m. in the High School Commons. The Fall Fest will feature live music, food and more, Lind said.
"A bluegrass band has volunteered to provide music and we are also going to have WDC band members play," Lind said. "Our hope is that the community will attend the Fall Fest to support the school's band program."
The Wadena-Deer Creek Education Foundation is a 501.3(c) charitable organization with a mission to support and enhance learning. In addition to Lind, the WDC Foundation Board of Trustees includes Matthew Van Bruggen, chair; Joyce Boyne, Sharon Boline, Curt Grenier, Linda Johnson, Peggy Larson, Ann Pate, Jamie Pettit, Michelle Silvers, Sue Wirta and WDC Superintendent Virginia Dahlstrom.
