The schedule of Wadena-Deer Creek Community Education classes and activities for the winter season is now available. A flyer was inserted in the Jan. 8 Intercom. Flyers are available at any of the Wadena-Deer Creek school offices. Or, you can go online to the WDC School website to view the schedule and register at www.wdc2155.k12.mn.us. The winter schedule of classes features new offerings and many old favorites. If you have any questions, Call Sandie Rentz at the Community Education office at 632-2396.

Winter 2011 Classes/Activities

Introduction to Computers

A basic computer class for those who have a minimal knowledge of computers. The class will help you better understand how to use your computer more effectively and safely.

You'll learn how to open and use basic programs, what files and file types are, where your files are stored, how to organize the files and more! This is a hands-on class.

• Dates: Feb. 22 and 28

• Times: 6-8 p.m.

• Location: Media Center, WDC Elementary School

• Instructor: Monica Katzenburger

• Cost: $40

Taking the Mystery Out of Facebook

Learn how to set up with your own Facebook account so you can start keeping in touch with family and friends. Facebook is a social networking tool that can help you reconnect with long-lost friends or relatives. You will also learn about security and how information gets shared on Facebook, as well as what to include on profile pages and how to adjust the privacy settings. This is a hands-on class. Must have general computer knowledge.

• Dates: Feb. 8

• Times: 6-8 pm

• Location: Media Center, WDC Elementary School

• Instructor: Monica Katzenburger

• Cost: $25

Buy and Sell Stuff Online

Learn how to set up an eBay account and a Paypal account, so you can begin buying and selling items online. Learn tips for searching for the items you want to buy and how to list the items you want to sell. Students will also explore TO Craigslist.com, where you can buy and sell without any fees or additional charges. This is a hands-on class. Must have general computer knowledge.

• Times: 6 -8 p.m.

• Location: Media Center, WDC Elementary School

• Instructor: Monica Katzenburger

• Cost: $25

Driver Safety Class -- 8 Hours

The state of Minnesota offers a 10 percent insurance discount if you complete this class. Taught in a classroom setting using a workbook to give you a variety of tips to keep you driving longer safely, you will learn how to cope with changes that occur as you grow older. Bring your driver's license and AARP card to class.

• Dates: March 15 and 16

• Times: 5:30-9:30 p.m.

• Location: Cafeteria, WDC Elementary School

• Instructor: Audrey Stearns

• Cost: $20

Refresher Course -- 4 Hours

Within three years of taking the first driver safety class, a four-hour course needs to be taken in order to maintain the 10 percent insurance reduction. Bring your AARP card and driver's license to class.

• Dates: Jan. 18 or April 19

• Times: 5:30-9:30 p.m.

• Location: Cafeteria, WDC Elementary School

• Instructor: Audrey Stearns

• Cost: $18

Make and Take -- Visual Supports

Do you struggle with getting your children to take a bath or go to bed? Learn valuable tips from Tabitha Petrowski on how to use visual supports to communicate effectively with your children. You will be introduced to various visual supports and shown how they can help you and your children with schedules, daily routines, transitions, meal times, bath time, etc. Materials will be supplied.

• Dates: Jan. 17 and 24

• Times: 6-7 p.m.

• Location: Media Center, WDC Elementary School

• Instructor: Tabitha Petrowski

• Cost: $20
