Warriors hand Pirates 12-8 loss
Mike Mahlen knew before the season that his Verndale Pirates were going to have to play strong football from the get-go. The Wheaton-Herman-Norcross Warriors proved him right Friday night in a 12-8 victory at Wheaton.
Wolfgang Brink scored twice and the WHN defense held Verndale to just 78 total yards.
Brink cashed in on scoring runs of one and two yards in the second quarter to give WHN a 12-8 halftime lead.
Jacob Perius put Verndale on the scoreboard in the second quarter with an 86-yard kickoff return.
The Pirates had a chance to turn the tables in the fourth quarter when they recovered a fumble at WHN's 45 but the Warriors stopped their drive.
"They played real good defense," Mahlen said, praising the Warriors. "Offensively they ran the ball fairly good but we gave them too good of field position."
The Warriors gained 219 of their 245 yards on the ground. Riley Wilson rushed 13 times for 64 yards while Brink carried 18 times for 61.
Cody Yungbauer was Verndale's top ground gainer with 41 rushing yards on 16 carries. Matt Willis shook free to catch a 33-yard pass.
Mahlen was also impressed with Verndale's defensive effort. Dallas Ehrmantraut came up with 16 stops while Yungbauer had 16. Dan Kneisl and Jardan Stinar were credited with 14 apiece. Stinar also had two sacks.
The Pirates will play a road game with rival Bertha-Hewitt Friday. Verndale edged Bertha-Hewitt for the Section 4, Class Nine-man title last year.
