Wadena's 'Summer of Fun'
Wadena's "Summer of Fun" kicks off Wednesday, June 17 and 65 businesses will be participating in 34 annual events that reach into September.
Big screen televisions and a large furniture set will be the featured prizes of this year's four-month-long event schedule. The change from cash giveaways to big ticket items prompted a name change away from the "Wad of Fun."
Gift certificates for local businesses will give "Summer of Fun" participants a chance to visit the establishments of Wadena merchants. There will be weekly prize drawings throughout the summer. Wadena merchants will have drawing boxes in their establishments.
The first week of the event will see the "Wadena County Has Talent" Show June 17. The show kicks off at 7 p.m. at the Cyber Cafe. Contestants will be seventh through 12th grade students from WDC. Individual performances of comedy, dance, magic, vocal and instrumental music along with other talents will be considered for prizes.
Events on June 18 will open with the Town and Country Breakfast from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at BN Park. Wadena's "Grand Parade" is set for 7 p.m. on Jefferson Street with 100 units and four marching bands expected.
"I would say by far that the one that draws the most people, by far, is the parade," said Wadena Chamber of Commerce executive director Shirley Uselman.
June 18 events will also include a pie and ice cream social/bratwurst-BBQ lunch at the Historical Society Depot, Parade Day Bar-B-Ques at the Cyber Cafe and the Colgate Country Showdown at VFW Post 3922.
June 20 events include the "Summer of Fun" Family Day and the Sunnybrook Stomp 5k race-walk. The family day festivities will begin with a Youth Pancake Breakfast at 7 a.m. followed by a fishing tournament from 8-11 a.m. A kiddie tractor pull for kids up to age nine is set for 1:30 p.m. A Minnesota Tae Kwon Do demonstration is for 2 p.m. and a Frisbee Golf Tournament begins at 2:30 p.m. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m. there will be painting, suncatchers, piggy banks, bead work, water balloons, games and crafts at the park. A Museum Hop will be held at the Depot.
The Sunnybrook Stomp is a five kilometer running and walking event. The event begins at 8 a.m. with a check-in starting at 7 a.m. at Birch Shelter in the park.
The Hospice Breakfast is set at the Elks Lodge June 21 and the "Miss Wadena" Pageant is set that day at the WDC Auditorium.
The "Summer of Fun" attracts people to Wadena from a 20-mile radius. It wraps up Sept. 12 with the Firefighters Rodeo at the Wadena County Fairgrounds.
