Wadena SWCD names poster and essay winners
Tess Jones, who received first place poster honors and is a fifth grader at Wadena-Deer Creek School, also received a $250 scholarship from the Wadena Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to attend the Isaak Walton League Camp at Deep Portage Learning Center in Hackensack.
Each year the Wadena Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) sponsors a poster and essay contest in local schools to help promote awareness of our natural resources and the effort needed from each person to make our environment a healthier place for everyone. The SWCD offers the contest to fifth and sixth grade students in Wadena County. Each entry in the contest is judged on how well the student expresses the yearly theme. This year the theme for the contest was "Our Soil — A Layer of Life". The SWCD provides the information to help students gain an understanding of the topic.
All fifth and sixth grade students in Wadena County were given the opportunity to submit an entry into the contest with a poster or essay. Individual winners are chosen from each school that participates. School winners are then judged at the county level for the top three winners in each category. Winners at the county level are forwarded to the North Central Area competition to receive a cash prize and the possibility for a camp scholarship. They competed against eight other SWCDs: Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching and Lake of the Woods. Our local North Central Area VIII winners:
First: Tess Jones — Wadena-Deer Creek
Second: Lilyenne Helland - Sebeka
First: Jasmyn Wood — Wadena-Deer Creek
Second: Grace Olson - Sebeka
Third: Isaac Ries — Wadena-Deer Creek
