Wadena nine advances in sub-district tourney
Wyatt Fitzsimmons laced a two-out single to score Jake Dykhoff with the winning run as Wadena edged Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 4-3 Wednesday in the first round of the Sub-District playoffs. The victory propelled Wadena into Monday's second round of action against No. 1 Sebeka and dropped BHV into consolation action Monday.
Post 171 grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Jake Krause and Wyatt Weber reached on errors. Krause scored on a single by Isaac Laughlin and Weber came home on a single by Fitzsimmons.
BHV struck back in the top of the fifth as Preston Riewer drew a walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Mac Schluttner, went to third on a single by Zach A. Johnson and scored on a fielder's choice.
BHV jumped ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth. Jordan Frethem doubled, Mitchell Blaha singled, Riewer walked and Johnson singled.
Post 171 came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning as Laughlin doubled, moved up on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
Dykhoff led off the seventh with a single. After Krause flied out, Dykhoff went to second on a wild pitch. Christian Berg then singled him over to third where he scored on Fitzsimmons' base hit.
Fitzsimmons went 3-for-4. Laughlin and Dykhoff both went 2-for-4.
Johnson and Eric Blaha had two hits apiece for BHV.
Berg went the distance to notch the mound win. The Wadena right-hander gave up six walks and eight hits while allowing three earned runs.
Riewer was tagged with the loss as he gave up 10 hits and his club committed four errors. Riewer did not walk a batter and fanned eight.

Sebeka 6-5, Wadena 3-4
Top-ranked Sebeka took advantage of some Wadena miscues Monday to sweep the Post 171 crew on their home field.
Sam Tellers reached four times and scored a run as Sebeka won the opener. Kyle Skoog went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.
Sebeka came up with five runs in the top of the third to break a 1-1 tie.
"We played a good game," Wadena Coach Kevin Tumberg said. "We made a couple of errors and gave up a big inning but other than that we hung tight with the top seed in our league."
Mike Behl went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run in the loss. Mitchell Swanson scored once while reaching base twice on a hit and a walk.
Behl went the distance for Wadena allowing seven hits, five walks and four earned runs while fanning three. Post 171 committed three errors.
"Mike threw the ball well but needs to keep working on his control," Tumberg said.
Taylor Carlson picked up the mound with a four-inning performance. Carlson surrendered five hits while striking out two.
C.J. Maki came up with a walk-off single in the top of the sixth as Sebeka edged Wadena in Game 2.
"We fought very hard in this game and it just got away from us," Tumberg said.
Christian Berg reached twice, scored once and came up with a triple in Wadena's two-run fifth. Isaac Laughlin reached base three times when he laced a pair of singles and was hit by a pitch. Swanson doubled and scored.
Tom Tellers was 2-for-3 in supporting his own winning cause on the mound. Carlson started on the hill but left in the third. Tellers pitching the final 3 1/3 innings.
Joe Wallgren went 4 1/3 innings for Wadena. Reliever Kyle Kern was tagged with the loss.
Wadena ended the regular season with a 6-7 mark.

Mac Schluttner and Travis Eckel both drove in two runs and Preston Riewer had three hits and three runs as the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Legion trounced Staples 7-1 Tuesday at Staples.
The victory gave Steve Riewer's BHV club a 5-7 record and snapped a string of three straight losses.
Eric Blaha fired a two-hit gem for BHV. Blaha walked three and fanned 10 in going the distance.
Schluttner gave BHV a 1-0 lead in the first when he singled, stole second and scored on an error.
BHV struck three times in the second frame as Jordan Frethem singled and scored on a base hit by Joe VanDenheuvel, Mitchell Blaha reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Preston Riewer and Riewer scored on an error.
Both teams came up with solo runs in the fourth. Riewer singled and scored on a passed ball for BHV. Brady Smith scored for Staples when he reached on a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a grounder by Tyler Winkels.
BHV pushed the last two runs across in the sixth. Riewer singled, stole second and scored on a double by Schluttner. Zach A. Johnson moved Schluttner up with a groundout and Schluttner scored when Eckel reached on an error.
Eric Kossan was hung with the loss.
