Wadena library patron receives $1,000 scholarship from MCSP

Sorry I'm a little behind in getting my article in folks. These new deadlines will take some getting used to. We are picking up the pace here at the library since school started. Our afternoons are incredibly busy as you can imagine with the students making their way here after school. I do encourage anyone needing to use a public access computer to call ahead and make a reservation if at all possible, especially if they need it after 3 p.m.

There is some exciting news to report. For those of you who signed your children up for the summer reading program you may remember an opportunity to enter a drawing from the Minnesota College Savings Plan program for their Get Creative @ Saving for College contest. The prize was a $1,000 scholarship for the child and a $500 donation to the child's library. Well, I am so happy to report that a patron from the Wadena City Library won the $1,000 scholarship prize. Congratulations Zachary Deppa! It's a great way to start saving for college. The Kitchigami Regional Library as well as the Wadena City Library celebrate your continuing education!

The Friends of the Library will be having their Fall Book Sale the first week in October. The sale will be held once again at Messiah Lutheran Church at 601 South Jefferson Street. Book donations are welcome to be dropped off Oct. 5-6 from 2-4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 1-3 p.m. Please do not drop off magazines or old encyclopedias and reference books more than 10 years old.

The actual book sale will start Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 5-7 p.m. and will continue Thursday, Oct. 8 and Friday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone who is willing to volunteer their help and/or would like to join the Friends of the Library please contact Doris Veden at (218) 631-4024 or Marge Leslie at (218) 631-4005. Many hands make for light work! So gather up your donations everyone ... it's time to restock the shelves.

While it may feel like summer outside, we are already thinking winter inside the library. Staff is preparing for a new winter reading program for adults. It's going to look a little different this year but I know you will love it. The theme will be different and we will be offering a new assortment of prizes. Keep it in mind. It will be here before you know it.

By the time you read this article we will be celebrating Banned Book Week. Banned Books Week -- Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September each year. Since 1982, this annual American Library Association event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express your opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist only where the freedom to express yourself and the freedom to choose what opinions and viewpoints to consume are both met. We will be displaying the lists of books that have been banned over the years as well as some of the books themselves.

I want to say that it's been a very busy summer, not only with all the activities and the huge amount of patronage here at the library, but with the staffs own personal activities as well, and I want to acknowledge my staff for a job well done and thank the public for utilizing their public library and taking advantage of all its wonderful and useful resources. Pass the word ...

By the time you read this Happy Autumn! Don't forget to take the time to read a book ... only good things can come from it. See you at the library!
