Wadena Legion bows to Walker/Nevis in eight inning slugfest
Walker/Nevis needed eight innings to put down a comeback charge by Wadena Wednesday and post a hard-earned 11-10 American Legion baseball victory.
Walker broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with a seven-run explosion that gave them an 8-2 lead.
Wadena came right back in the top of the fifth scoring eight runs to take a 10-8 lead. Walker was able to send the game into extra innings but the hard-hitting Post 171 crew grabbed an 11-10 lead in the top of the eighth.
"I was proud of the way we didn't hang our heads and we continued to battle," Wadena Coach Kevin Tumberg said.
Jake Krause led Post 171 at the plate going 4-for-4 with a walk, a home run, three RBIs and three runs. Jarrett Pettit went 3-for-5 with two ribbies. Logan Schmidt drove in two runs and scored one.
Austin Becker was Walker's big hitter going 3-for-5.
Byran Sea earned the mound win and Christian Berg took the loss.

Stung by two one-sided losses to Blackduck the Post 171 crew swept a pair from Staples Monday in Wadena.
Zac Schertler , Christian Berg and Mike Behl triggered a 16-hit attack as Post 171 dominated Game 1. Schertler could not be stopped as he went 4-for-4, scored twice and stole a base. Berg was also unstoppable going 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in a run. Behl came through big in the third inning with a two-run double.
"We came ready to play and our bats were on fire," Wadena Coach Kevin Tumberg said. "We have not been scoring runs lately so busting out with 16 hits and scoring 13 runs was great."
Berg scattered eight hits while walking three and fanning two.
Colton Paskewitz went 2-for-3 and scored once for Staples.
Post 171 took charge early in Game 2 scoring six times in the bottom of the first.
Jarrett Pettit was 1-for-1 at the plate, drew two walks, scored once and drove in three runs for Wadena. Tristan Lecomte had a two-run single in the first.
Logan Schmitz blanked Staples in four of the five innings he pitched. Schmitz walked four but allowed only four hits and struck out six.
Tyler Winkels reached twice for Staples and drove in a run.
