Wadena Golden Glovers ready for Upper Midwest
Four Wadena boxers will be vying for trips to the National Golden Gloves tournament at the Upper Midwest tournament April 27-28 in Cass Lake.
Kevin Harper, John Johnson, Blake Herron and T.J. Steward will be representing Region 4 in the two-day Upper Midwest event at the Palace Casino.
The National Golden Gloves tournament is slated for May 13-18 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Harper was an Upper Midwest champion two years ago. The 114-pounder “is tall, rangy and throws great punches,” according to Wadena Boxing Club Coach Bob Tubandt.
Harper was unopposed in the Region 4 tournament.
Tubandt is impressed with the improvement of his 132-pound entry in the Upper Midwest. “He’s come a long way in the last three years,” Tubandt said. “He does a lot of moving around and he’s hungry.” Johnson won the Region 4 title in his weight class last year but lost in the Upper Midwest.
Johnson stopped Chazke Roper of Leech Lake with a decision March 30 in the Region 4 tournament to earn his trip to the Upper Midwest.
Tubandt said he has seen a world of improvement in his 141-pounder. “He’s fought matches against the best and he’s won them,” Tubandt said. “He’s a very good mover and he throws a nice, straight punch.”
Herron, a Brainerd native who fights under the Wadena banner, was unopposed in the Region 4 tournament.
“He’s just a very tough guy, he’s very competitive,” Tubandt said of his 152-pounder. Steward is Tubandt’s most experienced boxer. In eight years of competition Steward has won four regional titles and posted more than 70 ring victories.
Steward claimed a decision against St. Cloud’s Brenden Fielder at the Region 4 tournament to earn his trip to the Upper Midwest.
