Wadena fighters fall short in Upper Midwest boxing tournament
Wadena's four young boxers tasted defeat Saturday and Sunday in the Upper Midwest Boxing Tournament at Northern Lights Casino near Walker.
Defending Upper Midwest champ Kevin Harper lost on a decision in the finals to 114-pound opponent Zoo Bangs of St. Paul. Wadena super heavyweight Jose Perez was decisioned by North Dakota boxer J.J. Moen in the championship match.
Wadena's John Johnson and Cole Cottrell went down in semifinal action with Johnson losing a second round RSC to North Dakota 141-pounder Renam Garcia and Cottrell falling to St. Paul's Cory Thompson by RSC in the first round.
Region 4 boxers advancing at the Upper Midwest were Brainerd's Nate Rubin and Fergus Falls' Sergio Garcia. Rubin won a decision over Mitch White of Minneapolis at 132 whiel Garcia defeated St. Paul's Brad Heroff by decision at 123.
The Golden Gloves National Tournament will be held April 30-May 5 in Mesquite, Nev.
