Wadena-Deer Creek preschool in seventh year
By Patti Isaacson, preschool coordinator
Wadena-Deer Creek Preschool has evolved through the years from a part-time school readiness program, to a program that operates the entire school year and serves over 75 percent of children who enter Kindergarten at WDC. We are in our seventh year as a full-year program.
What is WDC Preschool?
WDC Preschool is a nurturing place for children. It is wonderful preparation for elementary school; it’s a place where young children can meet and interact, feel safe away from mom and dad, learn and have fun!
What do kids learn at preschool?
Some of the skills that children learn in preschool include; independence, how to get along with others, beginning literacy, language, math, self-help, science and explorations of the arts.
What is the schedule?
Three- and four-year old children can attend preschool at Wadena-Deer Creek on a schedule that works best for them. Options include two half days a week for three year olds (age by Sept. 1) either a.m. or p.m. Four year olds (age by Sept. 1) can attend either four half days a week – a.m. or p.m. or full days twice a week.
WDC Preschool is a highly rated program.
We are very proud of our four-star rating that we recently received from MN Parent Aware. Parent Aware is a rating system developed to help parents choose quality early childhood programs for their young children. In order to qualify for this rating, our staff has gone through training in appropriate curriculum and assessment and providing a preschool program that meets the diverse needs of all young children and helps them to be successful in their future education.
This four-star rating qualifies our program for a grant that will provide scholarships for children to help with the cost of attending preschool. Scholarships will be awarded to families that qualify based on family size and income.
What is the cost?
WDC Preschool is funded partly through School Readiness funds from the State of Minnesota and from parent fees. Fees are on a sliding scale based on family income.
Parent involvement is important throughout a child’s educational career. Open communication and activities that parents and young children participate in together are ways parents are involved in our program. Family Fun nights are provided collaboratively with ECFE, Head Start and Preschool. The next Family Fun Night is Holiday Fun on Dec. 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. This event will take place in the Early Childhood rooms at WDC Elementary. At this event, children and parents will be able to make holiday crafts and experience seasonal sensory fun. No registration is necessary for this event – just come and enjoy!
