Wadena County to share Otter Tail County's solid waste director
Wadena County commissioners approved a resolution to allow Otter Tail County Solid Waste Director Mike Hanan to serve both counties after the Otter Tail County Board voted in favor of the idea.
Otter Tail commissioners are excited about the concept and look at this as a stepping stone to more collaboration, Hanan said. It's also an opportunity to show other counties that collaboration is something that will be beneficial.
Otter Tail County Board Chairman Everett Erickson sent a letter to Wadena County commissioners saying it is his board's understanding that Wadena County would pay $19,500 per year for Hanan's salary plus 10 percent as overhead for the use of Otter Tail office supplies and 35 cents per mile starting from New York Mills for use of Otter Tail vehicles.
The counties will develop a contract with specifics about the pay and duties covered. A start date is yet to be determined.
When Hanan starts Consultant Mike Gibson would relinquish his responsibilities to oversee the solid waste department but would continue to work on a regional solid waste collaboration, Commissioner Bill Stearns said.
Hanan said the regional collaboration concept has developed to the point where staff will soon be bringing ideas to the policy makers.
