The Wolverines trailed by two with 12 seconds left and head coach Keith Ferris called a timeout.

"Courtney was having a really good half of basketball and I wanted to try and get the ball into her hands," Ferris said.

The Wolverines executed a play that gave Volkmann the final shot and the senior point guard made it count.

"It was an early Christmas present for me," Ferris said. "The game was a battle until the final buzzer. This will give the girls some confidence to win close games down the road."

Volkmann paced the Wolverines with 20 points and five steals. Emily Miron kicked in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Vikings held a 26-21 lead at halftime on their home court.

Mackenzie Strand led the Vikes with 12 points while Anna Skow-Anderson scored 10.

The Wolverines hit on 17 deuces and five treys but did themselves no favors at the foul line where they missed all eight of their shots. The Vikes were 14 of 20 at the line.

The Wolverines take a 7-1 record into the Christmas break. Their next action is a home game Jan. 4 with Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton.
