Volkmann triggers 67-40 win over Browerville

Caitlin Volkmann hit a three from the top of the key early in Tuesday night's game with Browerville and made it look easy.

The 5-8 junior guard proceeded to drop in four more and score a game-high 21 points as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines walked past the Tigers 67-40.

Emily Miron and Avery Jackson backed up Volkmann with 14 and 10 points respectively. The Wolverines shot 46 percent from the field connecting on 23 of 50 floor shots. The Wolverines were also at home at the foul line canning 16 of 22 free throws. Eight players contributed to the scoring.

Miron racked up a double-double by pulling down 14 rebounds. The 6-2 post also blocked eight shots. Jackson dished out six assists.

Matt Middendorf's Tigers have the distinction of being a team without a single senior. Eighth-grader Kale Knutson paced the Tigers with 14 points.

The Wolverines have now won five straight games to boost their record to 18-5. The Wolverines go on the road Feb. 21 for a game with Bertha-Hewitt.

The Tigers dropped to 5-16.

The Wolverines snapped Crosby-Ironton's eight-game win streak at Crosby.

The victory improved WDC's season record to 17-5 and gave them a 5-3 record in the tough Mid-State Conference.

Emily Miron scored 17 points for the Wolverines with Avery Jackson tacking on 12. Heather Theisen and Caitlin Volkmann combined for 15. The Wolverines shot 47 percent from the field.

Chelsey Bonsante netted 17 points for the Rangers while Missy Foote chipped in with 13. The Rangers converted on only 15 of 50 shots from the field for a cool 30 percent clip.

The Rangers dropped to 13-8 overall and went to 3-6 in the Mid-State.
