Volkmann joins 1,000 point club
Courtney Volkmann passed the 1,000-point mark Tuesday night as the streaking Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines edged Staples-Motley 60-55 Tuesday night for their fourth straight cage win.
The junior guard went into the game with 991 career points and tacked up a season-high 25 to bring it to 1,016. Volkmann took a feed from her sister, Caitlin, and drained one her five three-pointers to reach the milestone in the first half.
"It is a great accomplishment to score 1,000 points during a high school career, but what makes it even more special is she has done it in her junior year," said WDC girls' basketball coach Brian Silbernick.
The game also saw Staples-Motley' Nikki Pearson pass the 1,000-point plateau and finish with 18. Caitlin Robinson backed up Pearson with 17.
Avery Jackson and Emily Miron combined for 17 points in the victory which saw the Wolverines convert on 54 percent of their shots.
The victory improved WDC's Mid-State Conference mark to 4-5 and their overall record to 8-13.
The loss stopped a five-game winning streak by the Cards and gave them a 6-3 conference mark and a 16-4 record overall.
The Wolverines held a slim 36-34 lead at the midway point despite the fact that Volkmann made 19 of her game points in the first half. Free throws made the difference as the Wolverines converted on 11 of 13 while the Cardinals made just 16 of 30.
