Vienna E. Noponen, 88, of New York Mills, passed away March 26, 2009, at the Elders' Home in New York Mills.
She was born Feb. 3, 1920, in Cloquet, Minn., to Charles and Hilja (Sallila) Pajari. She grew up in Floodwood, Minn., graduating from Floodwood High School with the class of 1939. She attended trade school and was employed with Great Northern Burlington Railroad as a telegrapher on the Iron Range for 37 years. In 1948, she married Olaf Sainio, and their marriage was blessed with two children, William and Lynn. On Aug. 26, 1972, she married Elvin Marley Noponen in Florenton, Minn. Together they made their home in Britt, Minn. In 1982, she retired and enjoyed traveling the United States with Elvin. From 1996 to 2006, they made their home in Longview, Wash., where they enjoyed their retirement. In March 2006, they moved to New York Mills.
Interment was held in Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia, Minn. Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills. Condolences may be sent on line at www.karvonenfuneralhome.com.
Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Elvin Noponen of New York Mills; daughter, Lynn Sainio of Las Vegas; son, Bill Sainio of Castle Rock, Wash.; two grandchildren; many other relatives and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Eugenia; and brothers, William, Raymond and Arthur.
