Veterans Park project gaining momentum
The Veterans Park project for the Sunnybrook campground area is moving forward, and the Wadena City Council approved placing a sign in the park with assistance from public works director Ron Bucholz. The council also approved waiving the fee and sign permit.
Dave Ludovissie updated the council on the project. They had hired Kazoo Branding of Minneapolis to do the design, which was different from what was originally planned. Signs and Designs of Wadena will create the signs for the park.
The helicopter idea did not work out, but the proposed design of the monument is circular with walls listing the names of local veterans and paths pointing toward the center monument honoring different branches of the military and including an American flag and eagle statuette.
Council member Don Niles said that the design reminded him of the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C.
"It's an evolving situation and it could change," Ludovissie said.
He said the committee was made of veterans.
Ludovissie said the project was called Veterans Park, rather than Veterans Memorial Park, since it was about the living veterans as well as the ones who have passed on.
Ludovissie said they did a presentation in Menahga the previous Saturday which got a good response.
City Administrator Brad Swenson said that city attorney Jeff Pederson was working on an agreement.
