Verndale girls have daunting task in PRC

Dan Johnson sees a dogfight ahead for his Verndale Pirates this spring as they tackle a Park Region Conference schedule loaded with talent.

Six of the PRC's teams had better seasons than the Pirates last year and Johnson heads into 2011 with only five returning letter winners and four returning starters.

"The conference is very tough -- top to bottom," Johnson said. "We will have to have some underclassmen step up and fill the holes."

Senior Jenny Swenson will be back to handle some of the pitching load. Other seniors on the roster are catcher-outfielder Elizabeth Johnson and second baseman Lizzy Yungbauer.

Jordy Schluttner will be playing first while fellow junior Tori Kern fills an outfield spot.

Sophomores on the roster will be shortstop Teresa Moenkedick, outfielders Jackie Swenson, Verena Bracher and Sea Yean Lee.

Outfielder Mara Kern and pitcher-infielder Kirsten Korfe lead the freshman ranks. Other freshmen out this year are outfielders Brooke Holweg, Rachel Bertram, Kiana Lambert and Lauren Turner.

Olson is giving Otter Tail Central the nod in the Park Region Conference. The Bulldogs are a good bet having made three straight trips to the Class A state tournament. Eric Olson's OTC clubs have won posted a 70-10 record in that time.
