Verndale girls 10-run Eagles softball team
The Verndale Pirates beat up on New York Mills' Kendra McCall but they were baffled by Alexis Rankka Tuesday in a Park Region Conference split.
The Pirates sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth and beat the Eagles 11-1 on the 10-run rule in Game 1.
Lizzy Yungbauer singled in Crystal Haskin to cap a nine-run fifth. Jenny Swenson doubled in two runs for the biggest hit of the inning.
Haskin had three hits in four trips, scored twice and drove in three runs. Brittany Kern went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Swenson was 2-for-2.
Swenson went the distance for Verndale scattering four hits while surrendering only one walk against two strikeouts.
Jenna Esala managed a pair of hits for the Eagles.
Eight errors and Rankka's five-hit pitching carried the Eagles past the Pirates 7-1 in Game 2. Rankka threw six innings of shutout ball for Mills while scattering five hits and striking out seven.
Swenson gave up only one earned run in the loss.
Esala, RaeAnna Salo and Emaleigh Roberts all came up with two safeties. Salo scored twice.
