The victory snapped a string of five straight losses by the defending Section 4, Class Nine-man champions.

Meidinger, who was one of Verndale's best rushing threats last year, sprained an ankle Oct. 8 in a game with Underwood. He scored his first touchdown from 20 yards out and crossed the goal line again on a four-yard scamper.

Meidinger was just one of the injured players that Mike Mahlen had back for the game.

"We finally had all of our players back," Mahlen said. "They aren't all at full speed but you can see what happens when they can all play."

The Pirates also saw Cody Yungbauer cash in on a five-yard run, Nate Bart scored on a two yard run and Isaac Schmitz score from 45 yards out.

Mahlen will take his seventh-seeded team to No. 2 Underwood Tuesday for their Section 4 playoff opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Other Section 4 quarterfinal games will see Ashby (8) at Hillcrest (1), Onamia (5) at Bertha (4) and Eagle Valley (6) at Isle (3).

Mitchell Andrews spearheaded a 291-yard rushing night for the Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Wolverines Friday night as they topped the Verndale.

Facing off for the first time since last November when they met in the Class Nine-man quarterfinals at the University of Minnesota-Morris, the two clubs battled to a 14-12 halftime score.

Andrews, who logged a game-high 106 yards on 20 carries, put up CGB's first six points of the game when he broke loose on a 20-yard jaunt.

The Pirates hit back in the second quarter with Nate Bart finding Kyle Booth on a 24-yard touchdown pass.

With the game tied at six, Chalmer Combellick went in from 25 yards out to give CGB the lead. Kade Karsky added the conversion.

Jacob Perius exploded for the longest TD play of the game on the subsequent kickoff as he ran the ball 85 yards into CGB's end zone.

Karsky put up some insurance points for the Wolverines in the third quarter by scoring from the one.

Cody Yungbauer rushed 18 times for 62 yards and caught a 42-yard pass to lead Verndale's offense.

Dan Kneisl led the Verndale defense with 22 stops. Yungbauer had 14 tackles while Tim Kern and Colton Moyer both recorded 13.
