Verndale artist Madeline Ramirez is exhibiting her artwork in the Courtyard at Tri-County Hospital in Wadena as part of the hospital's Healing Arts program.

An artist's reception will be held from 3:30-6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, in the Courtyard on the lower level of the hospital. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Ramirez has had a passion for painting for as long as she can remember. She began painting on canvas when she was 14 years old.

"My paintings are really still life," she said. "They are a mixture of Van Gogh and Matisse and I love to use lots of color."

Originally from Puerto Rico, Ramirez moved to Minnesota in 2004. She and her family now make their home in Verndale.

Flowers, particularly sunflowers, are Ramirez's favorite thing to paint.

"I have a special fascination with sunflowers," she said. "There is something almost human like about them - they bow, smile, and struggle when they are growing."

Besides painting, Ramirez is into beading, crocheting and other crafts. She was involved in the Alley Arts project this past year and painted the center mural located on the south side of the Wadena Eye Clinic building.
