Wadena-Deer Creek High School seniors Trista Ashbaugh and Brandon Schmitz were recently recognized by the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA), headquartered in Staples.

At NJPA's 20th annual Student Recognition Banquet, Ashbaugh and Schmitz were among more than 40 students from the area who received scholarships and recognition.

WDC Media Specialist Loni Niles nominated Ashbaugh for her willingness to help others and share her artistic talents.

"Trista is always willing to helping others," Niles said. "She has donated her time and artistic abilities to help decorate the libraries, create a cover for the homecoming coronation programs and other school events."

Schmitz was nominated by Tyler Church, WDC High School principal. In his nomination, Church spoke of Brandon's respect and loyal school spirit. "Brandon is very respectful of classmates and staff. He is an excellent student to have in class and is always willing to help others. He is a faithful fan at our sporting events and a huge supporter of our athletic teams."

Ashbaugh is the daughter of Earl and Lisa Ashbaugh of Wadena. Schmitz is the son of Thomas and Mary Schmitz of Wadena.

NJPA is a member-owned cooperative that serves public and non-public educational systems, governmental agencies and nonprofits. The awards recognize students for their contributions as being self-starters, having positive dispositions and making contributions to their school and fellow students as well as being willing to help anyone and able to get along with everyone.
