Two runners earn medals in Morris

Two Wadena-Deer Creek harriers earned medals Monday as Terry Olson's Wolverines opened their 2010 cross country season at Morris on a hot and humid August afternoon.

Charley Cantrell ran a 17:53 time in her first varsity girls' race and earned a medal with a 15th place finish.

Will Eliason posted a 19:22 in the boys' varsity race and medaled with a 20th place finish.

Varsity runner Joey Pate was 54th with a 21:28 time.

Emma Schmitz challenged for first in the eighth-grade race with a runner-up finish of 8:29.

Adam Lund ran a time of 11:38 for 24th place in the seventh grade race.

WDC's Neil Janson and Zach Bernu dropped out of the field during the race due to the extreme weather conditions.

West Central Area's Kyle Toms won the boys' varsity race with a time of 17:12. Sauk Centre's Maren Greenwaldt won the girls' varsity title with a 16:17.

The Wolverines will host their annual invitational Tuesday at Whitetail Run Golf Course. A dozen teams are expected to compete.
