Trojans gain sweep of Pirates after trailing 9-1
The Verndale Pirates surrendered a 9-1 lead Tuesday as they were swept by Park Region Conference foe Sebeka 17-15 and 8-2.
The Pirates had an eight-run lead over Sebeka after the first two innings of Game 1 but saw the Trojans storm back behind the bats of Brett Brochpahler, Jessica Lindquist and Katie Huttunen. Brockpahler drove in five runs and collected a pair of hits. Lindquist went 3-for-5 as she drove in four runs. Huttunen went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Kirsten Korfe went 4-for-5 in the loss with four RBIs. Elizabeth Johnson, Jenny Swenson and Mara Kern all drove in a pair of runs. Swenson clouted a two-run homer.
The Pirates were guilty of six errors.
Game 2 saw the Trojans grab a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second and Kendra Steinke blank the Pirates in six of the game's seven frames.
Logan Redetzke scored three times for Sebeka. Lillquist came up with two RBIs.
Teresa Moenkedick went 2-for-3 as the only Verndale player to collect multiple hits off Steinke.
Kirsten Korfe issued six walks in suffering the pitching loss.

Mara Kern's clutch single to right scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to help the Pirates stop an 11-game skid May 5 with a victory over Brandon-Evansville.
Kern stepped into replace Tori Kern with the bases loaded and one out. The big inning started when Lizzy Yungbauer singled. Jordy Schluttner and Jenny Swenson then drew walks. Lizzy Weniger reached on a fielder's choice but the Chargers forced Yungbauer at the plate.
Kern's base hit brought in Schluttner and when Brandon-Evansville's Clare Bedore misplayed the ball, Schluttner and Swenson both charged home. Kern ended up on third base and scored when Jackie Swenson reached on an error.
Teresa Moenkedick and Elizabeth Johnson both went 2-for-4 as the Pirates won for the first time since April 12 when they beat Parkers Prairie 5-2.
Jenny Swenson allowed three hits in going the distance. Swenson walked three and fanned five. Only one of Brandon-Evansville's runs was earned.
Kinsley Randt, Kati Reisenauer and Taz Okerland collected hits for the Chargers.
