Theme for 2012: 'Maybe Today'
Tomorrow is the first day of 2012. Wow! It all goes so fast. Man's life is so short. The Bible says it is like a vapor or like a desert flower - here one moment and gone the next. Life is so transitory that once it is gone it is almost immediately forgotten. Only the closest of family and friends will remember you more than 10 years after you are gone. Ninety-nine percent of us will be completely forgotten in a generation.
Some may remember the movie "Dennis the Menace" from a few years back. Dennis' not-so-friendly neighbor, George, had this beautiful plant of which would only bloom once every 100 years, and then only at night, under the right conditions. George had been waiting for this special moment for years. He was so excited that he invited all his friends over for this momentous occasion. When the time came George was being distracted by the antics of "friendly" little Dennis. While taking care of these little distractions so that everyone could enjoy the evening, George missed the whole thing himself, an event never to be repeated again in his lifetime.
George had spent his time planning and waiting for this great event, only to miss it. This is the way life is for many. Life is short and many miss it while trying to live it. Moses said in Psalm 90:10 & 12, "The days of our lives are 70 years and if by reason of strength they are 80 years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow, for it is soon cut off and we fly away. So teach us to number our days so that we may gain a heart of wisdom." Through Moses, the Lord is saying, "You don't have much time, so redeem every day that you have. Don't waste it. And don't think that you will make up for your wasted time later on in life, because when that time comes you will not have the energy or strength to do much with it."
I believe in the Word of God. I believe in the promises of God. When He says that it is appointed unto man once to die and then the judgment, I believe Him. When He said that He would come back again to this earth to rule and reign, I believe Him. When He said that everyone will have to give an account, I believe Him. So, my theme for 2012 is, "Maybe Today." Maybe today He will come again, or maybe today He will end my life on this earth and ask me to give an account. I know that when I came into this world, if everything went well, I only had about 29,220 days. The Bible tells me to make each day count.
As we enter the New Year, time is marching on. Ephesians 5:15 gives us the following instruction; "See that you walk carefully, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil. This year we have only 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months. Time has been given to us as a gift, but it is fleeting. Once it is gone, we cannot retrieve it. So, we need to live today with an understanding that we may not have tomorrow. We need to live today and this year with an understanding that the only thing that will really matter is that which we have done for our Lord. Many of the things that we waste inordinate amounts of time with will seem pretty foolish when we meet our Lord and Savior and He asks us what we have done with the gifts He has given us, especially the gift of time.
Let's make this year count for eternity's sake. Let's be living with an anticipation that maybe today He will come and receive unto Himself all who belong to Him. Let's be determined that at the end of this year our Lord will be able to say of us, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
