Thalmann's late basket lifts Hornets over Pirates
Kaleb Thalmann scored the game-winner with six seconds left Friday night to lift the Henning Hornets over the Verndale Pirates 64-62 in a Park Region Conference showdown.
Verndale head coach Jordan Hinkle credited Thalmann with a nice move off a block to make the winning basket.
Thalmann chalked up a game-high 24 points in the game as the Hornets handed the Pirates their second loss in 10 conference games. The Pirates dropped to 15-4 overall. The Hornets sit atop the PRC standings with an 8-1 record. Henning is 12-6 overall. The two clubs have split during the regular season and with only two conference games left the Pirates need a slip by the Hornets.
"Now we need help," Hinkle said.
Mitchell Blaha tallied 17 points for the Pirates while Eric Blaha scored 15, Marcos Gomez scored 14 and James Kveton netted 13.
Thalmann was backed up by Patrick Dilly's 18 points and Andrew Smith's 17.
Both clubs shot the ball well. The Hornets converted on 55 percent of their floor shots and made nine of their 10 free throws. The Pirates shot 46 percent on their home court and made 12 of 15 free throws.
"We match up well but our styles are different," Hinkle said. "We like to run the ball through our forwards. They're a guard-forward dominated team."
The Pirates go back into action Thursday at New York Mills.
