The Wadena Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) held the 19th Annual Conservation Days Sept. 28-29 at the Old Wadena campground on the Crow Wing River, North of Staples.

Conservation Days is an educational field trip offered to fifth- and sixth-grade students from the Wadena County area. Learning stations are set up throughout the park with subjects like forestry, history of Old Wadena, history of the Voyageur, nature, soils, water and wildlife. The students spend 25 minutes at each station, learning about that topic. Approximately 350 students attended during our two-day event this fall.

The speakers for this year's field trip were:

• Forestry: Anne Oldakowski, forestry technician, Wadena SWCD; and Dave Aldeen, volunteer and retired NRCS district conservationist

• History of Old Wadena: Mary Harrison, historian

• History of the Voyageur: "Babou," Don Felton

• Nature: Richard Oehlenschlager, biological collections manager, Dept. of Biology, Science Museum of Minnesota

• Soils: Ivan Reinke, soil conservation technician, NRCS

• Wetlands/water: Molly Costin, technician, and Kari Tomperi, water resource management technician, Wadena SWCD

• Wildlife: Jeff Halverson and Greg Oldakowski, conservation officers, Department of Natural Resources.
