SWAT team disarms Sebeka man

Thomas Becker, 49, of Sebeka, had threatened two adult women with a firearm and may have been holding them against their will at the residence.

A five-hour standoff with police ended Wednesday night peacefully, said Wadena County Sheriff Mike Carr.

A sheriff's office dispatcher fielded a call from a woman just after 7 p.m. Wednesday from Third Street Northeast in Sebeka. The woman said an intoxicated man later identified as Thomas Becker, 49, of Sebeka, had threatened two adult women with a firearm and may have been holding them against their will at the residence. The dispatcher then lost the phone connection with the woman.

The sheriff's office attempted to contact Becker by phone, but was unsuccessful. The Wadena/Hubbard SWAT was called out, as well as the sheriff's K9 unit, Sebeka Police Department, Menahga Police Department, Verndale Police Department, Wadena Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and Tri-County Ambulance.

Carr said a standoff lasted nearly five hours, but Becker was taken into custody just before midnight. The two women in the residence were unharmed.

Carr said he was pleased with the conduct of all of the law enforcement personnel with what he called a "very serious situation."

Becker was taken to jail pending formal charges.
