State-ranked Tigers claw Pirates 74-59

Four Browerville players hit double figures Feb. 28 as Class A’s sixth-ranked Tigers topped Verndale 74-59 on the Verndale court.

Brad Dreher tacked up 17 points while Bryce Irsfeld and Kyle Petermeier netted 15 apiece and Cody Hansmeyer scored 10. The Tigers hit 11 of their 3-point shots and converted on 49 percent of their field goal shots.

Dallas Ehrmantraut poured in a game-high 23 points for the Pirates. Josh Gilb kicked in with 13. The Pirates shot 46 percent from the field.

The Pirates closed out their season with a 14-10 record, and ended the regular season at 22-2.

Upsala and Barnum were ranked No. 1 in the West and East Sub-Section 5A boys’ basketball tournaments.

Ranked behind Upsala in the west were Browerville (2), Pillager (3), Nevis (4), Swanville (5), Verndale (6), Menahga (7), Bertha-Hewitt (8), Eagle Valley (9) and Sebeka (10).

Ranked behind Barnum were Onamia (2), Isle (3), Northland (4), Hill City (5), Royalton (6), Ogilvie (7), East Central (8), Pine River-Backus (9) and McGregor (10).

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle will host the West Sub-Section 5A quarterfinals Saturday, while Mora holds games in the east. Semifinal action is set Tuesday and the Section 5A title game is set Friday at 7 p.m. on the Crosby-Ironton court.
