The Rangers handed the Wolverines their worst loss of the season in the opener as they racked up a 22-9 victory.

Mike and Mark Hoge delivered three hits, a double and three runs apiece in the romp. Reed Olander crossed the plate five times and went 2-for-3. Brett Arneson collected two hits and a home run as he gained the mound win.

Sophomore David Najjar started for the Wolverines and took the loss. Kenny Sakry came on in the fourth and Cody Redfield pitched the sixth.

"We had a rough game defensively in Game 1," WDC head coach Kyle Dykhoff said. "We are searching for a pitcher to step up in Kevin Tumberg's absence."

Tumberg sprained his right ankle playing basketball on Sunday and is not expected back until the final week of May. The senior standout has been a mainstay on the mound and at the plate this season.

Redfield swung the heaviest lumber for WDC as he went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, four ribbies and scored twice himself. Joining Redfield in doubles were Ryan Nelson, Tyler Wohlwend and Jake Rude.

Redfield homered and Jake Rude doubled twice in the second game as the Wolverines capitalized on five Crosby-Ironton errors for a 9-6 victory.

"We broke away the rust of not playing for a week," Dykhoff said.

Arneson swung the hot bat for C-I in Game 2 as he went 3-for-4.

Derrick Rude notched the victory while Mark Hoge suffered the defeat.

The split gave the Wolverines a 4-4 mark overall and a 2-2 record in the Mid-State.

Sophomore Ryan Redfield, who tore his ACL early last winter, has been cleared to play and will start out in the outfield. Redfield should also see some relief duty on the mound.
