Sperling sees competitive Park Region Conference
Justin Sperling sees the potential for a good dogfight in the Park Region Conference this season.
Sperling's Verndale baseball team played .500 ball in the PRC last year and finished the season at 7-7. The Pirates chalked up an overall record of 12-8 and won their home tournament.
"Menahga, Sebeka and Bertha-Hewitt will all contend for the conference championship, however, I think any team in the conference is capable of winning on any given day," Sperling said.
The Pirates need a lot of leadership from their upperclassmen this season because Sperling expects to play four or five of his sophomores.
Seniors on this year's squad include pitcher-outfielder Dan Weiher, shortstop-pitcher Jay Runyan, pitcher-first baseman Brady Siedschlaw and pitcher-shortstop-second baseman Matt Moenkedick.
The Pirates sported a good pitching staff last year with a team earned run average under 3.00.
Juniors on the squad will be outfielder Colby Schmidt and catcher-pitcher Clay Cottrell.
Sophomore prospects include pitcher Aaron Bounds, third baseman-pitcher Mike Hejhal, second baseman-pitcher Nate Bart, outfielder Shane Ollia, infielder Dustin Motschenbacher and first baseman-outfielder Cody Yungbauer.
Sperling will also played freshman outfielder Christian Siedschlaw.
