Sperling named dean of students in Verndale
Justin Sperling will take over as Verndale school's dean of students July 1.
Sperling has served as a third-grade teacher at Verndale for four years. He is a graduate of Wadena-Deer Creek High School and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Sperling received his principal's license this spring from St. Mary's University in Minneapolis.
The district received 35 applications for the position and interviewed six of them for the job, which was created when Brownlow moved up to assume the duties of superintendent which had been filled by Jim Madsen. Brownlow will also continue to act as the principal at Verndale.
"He works well with students and he has good student management," Brownlow said. "He does a good job of curriculum review and design."
Sperling has also served as head baseball coach at Verndale and is expected to retain the position.
Justin and his wife, Gena, have two children. Gena's father, Mike Mahlen, is the athletic director and head football coach at Verndale.
