Lyndel William "Sonny" Compton, 63, a resident of Divide, Colo., and formerly of Deer Creek, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs, Colo., after a courageous battle against cancer.
He was born Jan. 30, 1946, in Portland, Ore., to Frederick Compton and Violet (McLaughlin) Snook. He was a 1964 graduate of Deer Creek High School and attended Bemidji State University. He married Barbara L. Frey on Sept. 28, 1974, in Luverne, Minn.
He enjoyed reading, fishing and playing golf. He was an avid sports enthusiast who loved being surrounded by family. He made friends very easily with his quick wit and dry sense of humor. Once you were his friend, you were a friend for life.
He and his wife retired to Colorado in August 2008 after a career in collections in Minnesota for many years.
A celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 10, at the VFW Post 6992, 901 North Benton Drive in Sauk Rapids. Memorial services will then be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at the Hartquist Funeral Home, Highway 75 North at Elm Street in Luverne, Minn., with interment following at the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Barbara; his children, Patricia (Robert) Alger of Mesa, Ariz.; Les Compton of St. Cloud, Minn.; Chad (Jennifer) Compton of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight siblings, Michael (Lori) Snook, Janette Niemann, Cheryl (Andrew) Hampton, Sandra Hoffman, Donny (Jan) Snook, Larry Snook, Carl (Trina) Hubenette and LaNae Horner.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eric; a granddaughter; his parents; and a sister, Lois Snook.
