Snurdbird is the word
The Midway Snurdbirds celebrated their first Class C state baseball championship Monday as they tripped Moorhead 5-4 in 13 innings.
The Region 16C runner-up team posted a perfect 5-0 record in the tournament behind a peerless pitching effort that saw their staff post a 1.21 earned run average.
Shane Hendrickson scattered six hits and struck out four in a fine relief appearance.
The Snurdbirds broke a 4-4 tie in the 13th. Steve Wetterling drew a one-out walk and the Snurdbirds sent in Brandon Mickelson to pinch-run. Mickelson promptly stole second. After Jake Lund walked, Mike Baso loaded the sacks with an infield single. Vergas draftee A.J. Bunkowske drove in the winning run with a liner off the fence.
Lund earned Class C All-Tournament team MVP honors by going seven of 17 at the plate for a .412 batting average. Lund scored twice, homered, doubled and drove in four runs. He also posted a 3-0 mound record and a 1.14 earned run average. Lund fanned 34 battes in 23.2 innings of work.
Hendrickson, Baso and Zach Etter joined Lund on the all-tournament team.
A celebration for the Snurdbirds is slated for noon Saturday at the Menahga VFW.
