Slam pushes Braves past Shockers
Kyle Geiser hit a grand slam to highlight a nine-run fifth inning Sunday as the Bluffton Braves rallied past Wadena-Deer Creek 12-5 in a Hi-10 game at a jam-packed Bluffton field.
"Bluffton Stadium 'The Fish Bowl' was packed," WDC skipper Randy Jahnke said. "We came to play though. We will get 'em in Wadena."
The two Hi-10 clubs are slated to face off July 10 in Wadena.
The Braves were trailing 4-1 when they broke out in the fifth. Mark Sweere and Wayne Dykhoff each collected two hits for Bluffton.
The Braves played errorless baseball behind starter Kyle Dykhoff and reliever and winner Cody Geiser.
Jordan Wohlwend got the starting nod for the Shockers and took the loss. Travis George and J.J. Truax pitched in relief.
Jamie Nordlund had a round-tripper for WDC in the fifth. Norlund and Truax both came up with a pair of safeties.
The loss left WDC with an 8-8 mark overall. The Shockers will begin a busy July slate with a July 3 doubleheader with Bertha-Hewitt in Wadena. Game 1 is set for 6 p.m. The Shockers will host Countryside League foe Fergus Falls July 5 in Deer Creek starting at 1:30 p.m.
The Shockers gave up six runs in the seventh and eighth frames Saturday in a 9-2 loss to Pelican Rapids.
Brian Guler, Josh Fuller and Todd Johnson led the Lakers with two hits apiece.
Josh Holmes held the Shockers hitless until the fifth and scattered five hits in the game. Jayme George was hung with the loss.
