Six area matmen compete at Virginia Beach
Six area wrestlers recently tested their skills in National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.
Wadena-Deer Creek's Mitch Steffen posted a 1-2 record. Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale standout Colin Turchin and freshman Andy Bounds both finished ninth. Turchin won three of his five matches while Bounds went 2-2. New York Mills' Tommy Selander went 0-2 while teammate Shane Novak was 2-2. Parkers Prairie's Kevin Hahn won his first match but finished 1-2.
The national tournament drew 2,700 wrestlers in grades 9-12. Ten of Team Minnesota's 48 entries earned All-American status.
