Shockers score 20 against Staples; Braves lose three
The Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers shook off the pain of a 5-4 ninth inning loss to Clarissa Friday by trouncing the Staples Lumberbats 20-6 Saturday in Deer Creek.
The Shockers used seven extra base hits, including Jamie Nordlund's second homer of the year, to overcome Staples in a seven-inning game.
Travis George went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored three times in the rout. Nordlund, Seth Hamman, Randy Jahnke and J.J. Truax all scored twice for the Shockers, who improved their record to 15-0 against Lake and Pines teams over the last six years.
Truax went the first five innings on the hill to gain the victory. George and Nordlund each pitched an inning of relief.
Jared Morrill scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a "bang-bang" play according to WDC manager Randy Jahnke. Joe Cuchna collected the game-winning hit.
The Shockers led 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh when the Flyers scored three times. The Shockers tied the game 4-all in the top of the eighth.
Nordlund hit his first home run in the game while Travis George tied the game in the eighth with a two-run double.
Seth Noland picked up the win while Jordan Wohlwend suffered the loss.
The Shockers, who are now 5-4 on the season, will play a doubleheader with Perham Saturday in Deer Creek. Game 1 gets under way at 1:30 p.m.

The Hurricanes scored three times in the top of the ninth Sunday to rally past the Braves.
Ben Brimhall and Nick Lewis scored the go-ahead runs for the Hurricanes.
The Braves rallied from a 3-1 deficit and grabbed a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth when Kenny Geiser scored on a passed ball.
Bluffton's Kurt Mursu was hung with the loss. Dave Johnson earned the win in relief of Jamie Jacklitch.
Alex Conboy doubled twice for the Hurricanes, who improved to 4-1. The loss dropped the Braves to 3-4.

Jonnie Schmitz threw eight innings of shutout ball as the Pirates defeated the Braves Saturday in Bluffton.
Schmitz gave up six walks but only four hits.
The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 led in the first and starting hurler Dustin Geiser held the Pirates scoreless until the fourth. Perham scored the go-ahead run in the seventh and added four more in the ninth. Geiser was charged with giving up just one earned run in his seven innings of work. Cody Geiser finished up on the mound.
Dustin Geiser went 2-for-4 at the plate. Matt Schornack and Justin Berns each came up with a pair of hits for the Pirates.

Mike Huberty scattered six hits as the Angels handed the Braves a Wednesday night setback in Detroit Lakes.
Kyle Dykhoff gave the Braves six innings of work on the mound before giving way to Dustin Geiser. Dykhoff was saddled with the loss.
