The former storage room of the John Ehlen Park is being converted into an open shelter, but it has been hit by vandals twice in recent weeks.

Wadena Public Works Director Ron Bucholz said hopefully it was just kids being stupid. He said the inside of the shelter was tagged with pictures and "nasty words" over the weekend, and about a week before then, it was tagged with an 8-ball symbol.

"It kind of surprised me," Bucholz said. "We're just in the process now, we're going to make it a shelter."

He said they are hoping to have it done by summer, and to have ADA accessible restrooms ready.

The warming house of John Ehlen Park, which is the playground near Homecrest, was built by the Green Thumb in the 1970s and used mostly in winter as there was a skating rink nearby.

Since the 1980s, though, it had been just used for storage.

Bucholz said they are looking for volunteers to paint the shelter, and it could be a good project for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or other service organizations.
