The man who led the Minnesota National Guard through its largest post-World War II deployment will leave the job this fall.

On Oct. 31, Larry Shellito, who was based at the Wadena Armory during the 1970s, will retire after seven years as head of the Minnesota National Guard.

Shellito returned from Vietnam in the early 1970s to a country that did not welcome soldiers.
