Seven to take the stage Saturday

Seven candidates are vying for the Miss Wadena crown on Saturday. The Miss Wadena Scholarship Pageant "A Royal Event," which is celebrating 25 years, will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at Wadena Memorial Auditorium.

Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. Advanced tickets are available at Peters Snyder Drug, First National Bank of Wadena or from any of the contestants. This year's candidates are: Emily Ament, Chelsey Lawson, Kayla Youngbauer, Cally Johannes, Brittany Ronneberg, Amber Spartz and Cassandra Popp.

An open house celebrating 25 years of the Miss Wadena Scholarship Pageant will be earlier in the day, from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, at the Wadena Depot. Many of the former Miss Wadena winners will attend the event.

The pageant will include special performances by Miss Wadena 2007, Rachel Papillon, and the fifth- and sixth-grade Wadena-Deer Creek elementary lip sync winners.

The 2008 Miss Wadena little attendants are Courtny Warren, Kaylee Ova, Paige Barthel, Mari Grendahl, Mackenzie Carsten, McKenna Wangsness, Mackenzie Salge (2007 little attendant for Miss Wadena Rachel Papillon), and Kennedy Gravelle.

Emily Ament is the daughter of Wayne and Missy Ament and is sponsored by Pizza Ranch. She will sing "Lifesong." She has four siblings: Ashley (husband Dan Shingledecker), Stephanie, Seth and Kristyn. She plans to attend the University of Minnesota -- Twin Cities for architecture after she graduates from high school in 2009. She enjoys singing, drawing, quilting, time spent at the lake, and time spent with family and friends.

Chelsey Lawson is the daughter of Dan and Melissa Lawson and is sponsored by Drywall Supply Inc. She will perform a piano solo, "Threads of Love." She has two siblings: Ashley and Josh. She graduated in 2008 and plans to attend Minnesota State University Moorhead for elementary education. She enjoys being with family and friends, being outside, going to the lake, tubing, shopping and playing volleyball.

Kayla Youngbauer is the daughter of Chris and Kelly Youngbauer and Gary and Valerie Schwartz, and is sponsored by Youngbauer's Landscaping. She will sing "Once Upon a December" from the Disney movie "Anastasia." She has seven siblings: Josh, Olivia, Rachel, Haley, Jack, Garet and Adam. She graduated in 2008 and plans to attend North Dakota State University for nursing. She enjoys hunting, shopping, hanging with family and friends, softball, listening to music, driving her car, dancing, singing, fishing and going to the movies.

Cally Johannes is the daughter of Brian and Jolene Johannes and is sponsored by State Farm Insurance -- Johannes Agency. She will perform a dance, "Move" from the "Dreamgirls" movie sound track. She has three siblings: Erik, Ben and Tracy. She plans to attend Minnesota State University Moorhead after graduating in 2009. She enjoys shopping, dancing, rollerblading, swimming at the lake, listening to music, working out, and hanging out with family and friends.

Brittany Ronneberg is the daughter of Andrew and Leslie Ronneberg and is sponsored by R&J Horse Sales and Boondocks Cafe. She will perform a comedy act, "3-week-old Egg Sandwich." She has four siblings: Cody, Dylan, Tia and Ariel. She plans to attend St. Cloud State University to get a degree in teaching after graduating in 2009. She loves to sing in the car, hang out with her friends, water skiing, wake boarding, four-wheeling and fishing.

Amber Spartz is the daughter of Frank and Kathy Spartz and is sponsored by Dan's Painting. She will perform a piano selection. She has two siblings: Jesse and Raymond. She graduated in 2008 and is going to college for radiology. She enjoys playing the piano and trumpet, being outside and hanging out with family and friends.

Cassandra Popp is the daughter of Mark and Carol Rohr, and Steven Popp, and is sponsored by Otter Tail County NFO. She will sing "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" from Disney's "Hercules." She has four siblings: Jessica, Chelsey, Kelly and Megan. She graduated in 2008 and plans to attend Hamline University to become a high school history teacher. She enjoys scrapbooking, running and volunteering.
