The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) has awarded the nationally recognized Certified Preplanning Consultant (CPC) designation to Joseph Schuller of the Johnson Memorial Home in Wadena and Verndale.

The CPC program is considered the standard of excellence in funeral service for individuals who help families plan funerals in advance. In order to become a Certified Preplanning Consultant, candidates must meet specific program requirements and pass an examination based on a standards manual. CPCs must demonstrate their ongoing professional commitment by fulfilling learning requirements as they renew their certification every four years.

Schuller began his second career as a funeral director when he graduated from the University of Minnesota -- Minneapolis with a bachelor's degree in mortuary science.

After an internship in Little Falls, he joined the staff at the Johnson Memorial Home in 1995 as the director and manager of the Domian-Anderson Funeral Homes in Bertha and Eagle Bend. He obtained his insurance license in 2007, giving the Johnson Memorial Home the ability to offer different financial options to fit the prefunding needs of the four communities they serve. Joe and his wife Meg live in Bertha.

NFDA's Certified Preplanning Consultant program, established in 1996, recognizes qualified, knowledgeable individuals who are committed to provide ethical and caring advance planning services for all families.

"Those who have earned the CPC designation have achieved a unique career distinction that is highly valued by families that want to plan meaningful funerals in advance," according to Colleen Murphy Klein, who manages the program.
