Schmitz shattered her 82nd place finish of 16:19.9 in the 2011 state meet with a 45th place time of 15:39.4.

"This year she was strong enough to keep going, and she didn't fade like last year," WDC Head Coach Terry Olson said.

Olson was also impressed with the improvement Schmitz showed against Section 8A runners who joined her at the state meet in Northfield.

"At section, she ran ninth and at state she beat five people that beat her at the section," Olson said.

Schmitz ran a 16:08 at the Section 8A meet Oct. 26 in Bagley.

Olson has coached Schmitz since she joined the WDC cross country program as a seventh grader. Schmitz and Olson will be teaming up again next spring when Schmitz competes for WDC's track and field team.

Jeff Morris saw his Section 8A champion Perham boys win the Class A state meet with 37 team points. The Section 8A champion Perham girls placed seventh in the state meet with 194 points.
