Schmitz runs second-best time in Class A state meet
Wadena-Deer Creek junior Emma Schmitz ran her second-best time in a state cross country meet Saturday to place 69th in the Class A field at St. Olaf College.
Schmitz turned in a time of 16:03.6 in the field of 174 girls from around Minnesota. Schmitz was Section 8A’s 11th-fastest finisher out of 22 section participants. The WDC junior, who was appearing in her third straight state meet, qualified for the trip to St. Olaf with a section time of 16:28. Schmitz ran a 15:39.4 at state last year.
“Overall, I think she ran a tough, smart race,” WDC Head Coach Mike Brunsberg said.
The Class A state team title was claimed by Annandale with a score of 85. Section 8A team qualifiers Perham and Park Rapids placed third and 10th overall with scores of 138 and 244. Lizzie Fudge paced the Perham girls with a ninth place finish of 15:38.6. Fudge had the 29th-fastest time overall. Park Rapids was led by Lydia Kantonen’s 15th place time of 15:50.2. Kantonen was 43rd overall.
Cannon Falls’ Emi Trost was the top Class A individual finisher with a time of 14:40.3.
Roseau’s Ellie Nelson ran the fastest time of any Section 8A state qualifier, a 15:23.2, for 15th place.
Keeghan Hurley ran a winning 15:36.7 in leading the Perham boys to another state title. The Yellowjackets dominated the 16-team field with four placers in the Top 10. Joining Hurley were Jayden Cullen, who placed third with a 16:09.2; Billy Beseman, who took seventh with a 16:26.2 and Ben Sullivan, who finished ninth with a 16:38.7. In overall competition, Cullen finished fifth, Beseman took 10th and Sullivan finished 14th.
Perham’s Chris Knutson placed 32nd against team competition with a time of 17:23.6.
Turning in a fourth-place finish was Park Rapids’ Isaac Overmyer with a time of 16:00.1.
Section 8A runner-up Roseau finished 16th with a 355 score.
