Schmitz places 31st for Wolverines in Swain Invitational

Emma Schmitz placed 31st against Class A competition Saturday as the Wadena-Deer Creek harriers tested themselves in the giant Swain Invitational at Duluth’s Enger Park.

WDC’s two-time Class A state qualifier ran a time of 17:81. Teammates Tiffany Meeks, Briana Malone, Abi Motschenbacher and Gabi Ross placed 15th, 17th, 24th and 40th in the sophomore girls race with times of 19:39, 19:46, 20:17 and 21:02.

Konnor Stueve and Jimmy Kim earned 29th and 33rd place finishes in the sophomore boys race with times of 16:28 and 16:34.

Perham boys, Willmar girls dominate field at Perham Invitational Thursday

The Perham boys and the Willmar girls turned in dominating performances Thursday to take top honors in the Perham Inviational at Arvig Park.

Four Yellowjacket runners placed in the Top 10 led by Keeghan Hurley who won the race with a time of 15:28. Samantha Hanson led the Willmar girls to victory with a time of 15:02.2.

WDC’s Will Eliason placed 61st in the boys’ competition with a time of 18:42.8.

Emma Schmitz paced the WDC girls with a 21st place of 16:03.1. The Wolverines placed 15th in the 17th place field a team score of 403.

“Emma finished one spot out of the medals, but she showed that she's not far from breaking 17:00 minutes - a satisfying milestone that means that Emma is approaching peak fitness,” WDC Coach Mike Brunsberg said.
