The Wadena-Deer Creek junior ran a qualifying time of 16:28 last Friday at Twin Pines Golf Course outside Bagley in the Section 8A meet. Schmitz was sixth out of eight individual finishers qualifying from the section.

“I feel good and I feel healthy right now,” Schmitz said. “I would like to improve over last year.”

Running in perfect temperatures but a fighting a very strong breeze at Bagley, Schmitz, who has been described by coaches as a very “efficient” runner, used a strategy of tucking herself behind another runner letting them break the wind.

“You get behind someone and use them for a wind block,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz placed 45th in last year’s state meet with a 15:39.4. The WDC standout was 82nd in the Class A race during her first trip as a freshman with a time of 16:19.9.

With Schmitz leading the way, the WDC girls placed ninth in a field of 13 teams with a 223 score. Abi Motschenbacher and Tiffany Meeks finished 47th and 48th with times of 18:30. Briana Malone’s 19-minute pace gave her 62nd place. Gabi Ross finished  79th with a 20:13.

The Perham Yellowjackets made sure they would send both of their teams by taking top honors in the boys’ and girls’ races at Bagley.

Ellie Nelson of Roseau was the top finisher in the girls’ race with a time of 15:51. Perham’s Keeghan Hurley won the boys’ race with a 15:35.
