Schmitz finishes 82nd in Class A state meet
Emma Schmitz finished 82nd in a field of 156 runners last Saturday in the Class A girls' state cross country meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
Schmitz ran a time of 16:19.9 on the tough St. Olaf Course in sunny but breezy conditions. She qualified for state with a time of 16:02.10 at the Section 8A meet in Bagley Oct. 28.
The WDC freshman was making her first appearance in the state meet.
Underclassmen dominated the Top 10 individual times in the Class A girls' meet. Winning the meet with a 14:21.7 was Blake sophomore Clare Flanaghan with a 14:21.7. Runner-up honors went to Cannon Falls sophomore Emi Trost who turned in a 14:34.7. Seven of the top 10 times were recorded by underclassmen.
Park Rapids standout Lydia Lutz finished sixth with a time of 15:02.
St. Cloud Cathedral won the Class A girls' team title with 94 points. Perham was 10th and Park Rapids was 11th with scores of 222 and 227.
Senior Cassie Beseman turned in the top Perham time by running a 15:45.6 for 25th place. The Yellowjackets flashed their potential for coming seasons by fielding six underclassmen on their seven-member state team. Five Perham runners - Sydney Karels, Brynnan Covington, Racole Karels, Ciarrin Covington and Lizzie Fudge all ran times in the 16-minute range.
Section 8A standout Bryon Schuldt of Nevis won the Class A state boys' cross country championship with a time of 15:55.3 Schuldt was a four-second winner over Blake's Brandon Clark who ran a 15:59.4.
The Perham boys' cross country team lost the team title to St.Cloud Cathedral by a single point. The Crusaders came in with a score of 72 while the Yellowjackets finished with 73.
Brady Speicher was Perham's top harrier with an 11th place time of 16:33.7.
