Schmitz earns state trip at Section 8A meet

Nasty running conditions failed to stop Wadena-Deer Creek's Emma Schmitz from qualifying for her second trip to state Oct. 25 at Twin Pines Golf Course outside Bagley.

Schmitz placed ninth in a field of 119 runners in the chilly, windy conditions with a time of 16:08. The WDC sophomore qualified for her first state meet last year at Twin Pines with a time of 16:02.10.

Joining Schmitz in giving the Wolverines a 10th place finish in the 16-team field were Briana Rosenthal, who ran 42nd with a time of 17:55; Tiffany Meeks, who ran 67th with a 19:11; Gabby Ross, who placed 68th with a 19:12 and Liz Peterson, who finished 74th with a 19:27. The Wolverines brought in a team score of 248.

The WDC boys placed 14th in their 17-team field with 351 points. Tristin Godel led the way for WDC in the 121-man pack with a 41st place finish of 19:19. Konnor Stueve and Brody Wangsness kept pace with each other and finished 70th and 73rd respectively with times of 20:33 and 21:37. Adam Leverson and Joey Najjar rounded out the WDC field with 103rd and 108th place times of 22:41 and 23:08.

The Perham Yellowjackets won top team honors in both the boys' and girls' meets. The Perham boys took six of the top seven places and finished with 17 points. Keeghan Hurley, Brady Speicher and Billy Beseman ran 1-2-3 for Perham with times of 15:57, 16:12 and 16:15. Jayden Cullen, Nick Carignan and Dalton Dahms placed fifth, sixth and seventh for Perham with ties of 16:30, 16:44 and 16:55.

Roseau's Madeline Huglen set the pace in the girls' meet with a 15:34 but Perham's Brynnan Covington and Sydney Karels led the Perham girls with third and sixth-place times of 15:50 and 15:58. The Perham girls finished with 53 points.
