Rude hurls Wolverines to 4-1 diamond win

Derrick Rude spun a pitching gem Tuesday as Wadena-Deer Creek won the first end of a Mid-State doubleheader at Detroit Lakes.

The senior hurler scattered seven Laker hits and the Wolverines played errorless defense in a 4-1 victory in eight innings.

"It was a great pitching performance from Rude backed by solid defense," WDC head coach Kyle Dykhoff said.

Rude walked three and fanned eight before Ryan Redfield came on with two out in the bottom of the eighth.

Jake Rude and Redfield both went 2-for-4 for the Wolverines. Rude and Matt Laughlin drove in runs. Ben Lindquist and Nate Baker had two hits apiece for Detroit Lakes.

The Wolverines came up with 10 hits in Game 2 and had a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when the Lakers scored four times. Dykhoff's club regained a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh but a the Lakers staged a three-run rally in the bottom half of the inning for the win.

"We out-played Detroit Lakes with the exception of one bad inning," Dykhoff said.

Jordan Manning, Nate Baker and Ryan Berg all came up with two hits in the win. Najjar and Derrick Rude both went 2-for-3 for the Wolverines while Jake Krause went 2-for-4. Colter Pettit doubled and drove in two runs.

Tristan Huwe, Adam Patron and Mason Roberts combined to lead the Eagles past the Wolverines in a 10-inning game Thursday on the Wadena diamond.

Cool, cloudy conditions favored the batters as the two clubs combined for 30 hits.

Tristan Huwe had four hits for the Eagles. He scored three times and drove in two runs. Tyler Patron slugged a three-run shot while Adam Patron went 2-for-4 with two runs. Mason Roberts came up with three hits.

"Credit New York Mills for putting the ball in play," WDC head coach Kyle Dykhoff said. "Good things happen when you make contract."

The Wolverines led the Eagles 7-2 in the third inning of the slugfest but the Eagles grabbed a 14-12 lead in the top of the seventh. The Wolverines stayed alive by plating two runs in the bottom half of the seventh.

Jake Rude swung the hot bat for WDC going 4-for-6 at the plate. Rude doubled three times. Jake Krause and Cory Tumberg both collected two hits. Krause drove in three runs and Tumberg scored twice.

Ryan Redfield took the loss in a five-inning relief role. Roberts gained the win.

The Eagles committed nine errors in the game while the Wolverines were guilty of three.
