Roger Allen Parsons, 70, of rural New York Mills, passed away peacefully Aug. 18, 2009, at his home.
He was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Reedsburg, Wis. He grew up in Chicago, and was cared for by Donald and LaNore (Vanderlinde) Taylor. He attended Chicago Vocational School and served in the Navy from Jan. 31, 1956, to Sept. 19, 1957. Returning to Chicago, he was employed with Chromium Mining and Smelting. On July 23, 1960, he married Mary Ann Obarski at St. Bronislava Church in Chicago. Their marriage was blessed with 16 children. He and Mary Ann made their home in Chicago where he was employed with the Ford Motor Company. In 1976, the Parsons family moved to Nevis, where he was employed at a lumber mill before retiring due to health reasons. In 1988, they moved to Island Lake, rural Detroit Lakes, and then to Marion Lake in 1999. In 2005, he and Mary Ann made their summer home in Heinola and enjoyed spending the winter months in Arizona. Antique cars were his passion. He enjoyed building and restoring vintage cars. He also enjoyed watching Fox News, playing horseshoes, playing pool, golfing, boating, fishing and riding motorcycle.
Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Aug. 25, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otto Township, rural Perham, with the Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills (www.karvonenfuneralhome.com).
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Ann Parsons of New York Mills; eight daughters, Nadine (Tom) VanDeventer of Little Falls, Colleen (Steve) Hollingshead of Mesa, Ariz., Doreen Lawson of Detroit Lakes, Jill Ford of Coon Rapids, Kelly (Jeff) Blanton of Oakman, Ala., Tracy (Greg) Halverson of Detroit Lakes, Vanessa (Jeff) Anderson of Perham, LeeAnn (Jerry) Berndt of New York Mills; seven sons, Scott (Sharon) Parsons of Detroit Lakes, Greg (Lisa) Parsons of Osage, Brian (Tandra) Parsons of Detroit Lakes, Kevin Parsons of Detroit Lakes, Todd Parsons of Detroit Lakes, Daniel Parsons of Frazee, Glen Parsons of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Deb Peterson of Mesa, Ariz.; 43 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald (Pat) Taylor; many other relatives; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Shawn Parsons; and parents, Donald and LaNore Taylor.
