The funeral service for Roberta Bertram of Verndale will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at the Verndale Alliance Church with Pastor Tony Stanley officiating. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Under the care of Lakewood Hospice and surrounded by her loving family, Roberta passed away, on Monday, May 26, 2014 in rural Verndale. She was 78 years old.
Roberta Ann was born to Guy and Dessie (Crabtree) Schoonover on November 25, 1935, at their farmstead in Grant County, near Norcross, MN. She attended country school, Norcross Public School and graduated in 1953 from Herman High School. She was united in marriage with Gary Bertram, of Herman, on November 28, 1953. They farmed in Wheaton, Hoffman and the Artichoke Lake area before settling at their Verndale home where they raised their five children. After Gary passed away on July 5, 1987, and having been the wife of a farmer for 34 years, Roberta began Home Health and Hospice work for Lakewood Health System for the next 23 years. She was active with the Verndale Alliance Church, loved to read, and was especially fond of her time with friends and family.
Roberta was preceded in death by her parents Guy and Dessie; husband Gary; sister Ruth Roll; and brothers Ronald, Clayton and Arlo Schoonover.
She is survived by her children Nick (Denise) of Great Bend, KS, Sandra (Tim) Thompson of Stillwater, Julie (Gary) Lambert, John (Sherry) both of Verndale, and Angela (Nick) Messer of Bertha; 17 grandchildren & 17 great-grandchildren; siblings Darlene (Ted) Bertram of Bertha, Ardie (Bernie) Hanson of Excelsior and Dale Schoonover of Korea; along with a host of her dear friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tim Thompson, Jacob Thompson, Dan Freeman, Nathan Bertram, Bryan Bertram and Nick Bertram.
Burial will be in Hewitt Cemetery.
